Distribution and the Goalkeeper

Now let us talk about general goalkeeper distribution with our feet.  Both previous post gave us a good general idea of playing out of the back.  Playing with your feet can be off a goal kick, from a pass back, or a weak effort from the opposing team.  First lets look at what the distribution pattern of the of the top goalkeeper’s with his feet in Michel Vorm of Swansea City from inside his box.

As you will notice the red lines are incomplete passes.  What conclusion can you draw from the blue (complete pass) vs the red (incomplete passes)? Respond below in comment section.

Swansea GK

The picture above only shows how efficient or a lack of efficiency the goalkeeper may have been on the day.  The chart below will give you a little more perspective on how important it is for the goalkeeper to be comfortable at his feet and help his team maintain possession.

Gk Short Passes Possession

What are some of the advantages of playing short based on the stats above?  Based off your last game played what do you think your percentage of short pass was?  How many passes do you think you completed?

Some times having hard facts to back up why we decide to do what do can help complete the picture.
